"Rose McDowall began her career playing drums in the onset of punk in Glasgow with proto-avant guard trio The Poems with her then husband Drew McDowall. During the post-punk scene in Glasgow McDowall formed Strawberry Switchblade with Jill Bryson, becoming instantly involved with the Postcard Records post-punk scene. Strawberry Switchblade progressed rapidly from playing guitar-based harmony-dressed flower punk to become one Scotland’s biggest pop exports of the mid-80s. As a duo, Strawberry Switchblade fused keen melodic sensibility with dark lyrical content to create some of the best, albeit under-rated pop music of the decade.
Following the break up of Strawberry Switchblade, McDowall delved deep into the post-industrial folk underground, collaborating extensively with friends Coil, Current 93, Death in June, Into A Circle and members of the Icelandic scene that birthed Sugarcubes. McDonnell also worked briefly with Boyd Rice in the duo Spell, signing to the Mute label. Following this intense period of collaboration and self-exploration, McDowall formed Sorrow with her then husband Robert Lee. On the World Serpent label, Sorrow released two acclaimed albums “Under The Yew Possessed” and “Sleep Now Forever” as well as completing multiple tours around the world. Sorrow’s music is a pure, distilled neo-folk that involved elements of improvisation, neo-classical music, melancholy and above all, Rose McDowall’s simple and straight-to-the-heart songwriting and voice.
Rose McDowall has continued, in the aftermath of Sorrow, to expand her musical vocabulary, working with new musicians and seasoned players in the neb-folk, post industrial, experimental and pop worlds. In 2015, McDowall partnered with Glasgow-based Night School Records to re-issue Cut With The Cake Knife, a set of songs she recorded in the post-Strawberry Switchblade era with various musicians. Following its release, McDowall announced a full reissue series, with details to follow, and re-invigorated live tour schedules. Rose McDowall is currently working on new material and continues to work on her personal archive for future projects."
