The Domestiques are Andrew Paine and Kevin McCarvel

The Domestiques were formed by chance when Kevin McCarvel and Andrew Paine agreed to play a gig that neither of the bandmates from their respective projects could fulfill. Pleased with the hastily assembled collaboration it was agreed they would continue, leading them to perform live together again as part of Andrew Paine's Tectonics Festival performance in 2019.

As the Tectonics live recording was tied up in BBC red tape rendering it unreleasable, the pair retreated into Paine's new basement studio, The Extension, setting to work on Vol.1. Despite the studio once belonging to long running Scottish folk band Capercaillie, and buried underground within intersecting ley lines of the Third Eye Centre, Clive's Incredible Folk Club (birthplace of the Incredible String Band) and Glasgow's fountain of knowledge The Mitchell Library, absolutely nothing of these energies rubbed off. Instead the tracks are infused with deeper darker lying roots. Guitars more in tune with the energies of 70s rock and Japanese psych and electronics akin to late 70s / early 80s industrial experimenters.

Vol.1 heralds the first reportage from The Domestiques underworld studio and adds a new name to the Glasgow experimental music lineage.

    Kevin McCarvel
Originally from the Isle of Lewis, Kevin McCarvel is a Glasgow based musician whose main activity has been with Smoke Jaguar, a duo with axe wrangler Stuart Crutchfield who trade in repeat-riff blowouts and spontaneous guitar levitations. More recently he has collaborated with Andrew Paine in The Domestiques, a project consolidating their musical explorations into a blend of ragged destructo guitar, bass, shortwave radios, old tapes and electronics.

Other work has included live performances with The Flexibles and Frances McKee (Vaselines). Additionally he runs Nyali Recordings as well as Good Energy Records, a collaboration with Jennifer Lucy Allan of Arc Light Editions

    Andrew Paine
"of extreme use for meditation, navigation and general cuntedness” Julian Cope
Andrew Paine is a Glasgow based musician: his work ranging from solo voice, through layered howling guitars, gentle piano interludes, SW radio, oblique electronics and wherever he likes in between.

He initially broke cover collaborating with Richard Youngs in their progressive rock group project Ilk. Following their second album “Canticle” (VHF, 2005), he became particularly prolific, releasing many collaborative titles both with Youngs and with fellow Glasgow resident Caroline McKenzie as well as several solo titles. He founded his own Sonic Oyster Records in 2006 to release much of his work and co-founded the progressive kraut-rock power trio, Space Weather with Caroline McKenzie and Brian Lavelle.

Current duties extend to bass guitar with punk trio ‘The Flexibles’ , one half of theosophical thinkers ‘The Blue Tree’, with long-time collaborator, Matthew Shaw (Tex La Homa) and co-founder of Turds of the Reformation with Sybren Renema (Death Shanties).
