about

"The torch I held aloft for you, I stumbled with across deserted lands
I'd shed a tear or two it's true, should you fall into undeserving hands."

So laments singer Dan Weltman on Snails' new single 'A Mystery to Me', released on August 21 on Glass Modern. It's the second to be taken from the Bristol band's new LP 'Hard-Wired', due October on the same label.

According to the songwriter, the whole song was conceived and finished over the course of a day, playing around with the melody in his mind.

"This was a song started in the shower one morning and mostly finished on the way to the Chinese takeaway in the evening. I really enjoyed the process of writing away from the guitar for a change. Sometimes an idea might start out that way, but with this one I deliberately just kept working on it in my head until it was done."

Against a backdrop of strummed autoharp, soft Moog synth and double-tracked guitars, Dan Weltman dissects the taught and opposing tensions in a relationship threatened by lack of emotional honesty. The singer feels trapped - unable to lay bare his true feelings, while fully aware of the repercussions of keeping schtum.

For a sensitive and heartfelt torch song, however, the reception to its live debut was rather surreal for the band to witness:

"On its first airing, a little mosh pit started up with the audience chanting back the main theme to us by about mid-way through the song. It was completely bizarre, and I just started laughing. It was only afterwards we found out how many of them were on mushrooms... This was Bristol after all! But I took it as a good sign that it struck an emotional and melodic chord so readily upon first hearing."

The single is accompanied by a video made by artist Mog Fry, also the original co-vocalist for the band's first two singles.
